In addition to the Power Tools we introduced in Table 9.7 earlier in this chapter, the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Creative Suite includes tools that enable you to process files and edit text in a more lightweight mode. The Photoshop Power tools require significantly more time and attention to use because they create a virtual workspace, which is where you can manipulate and view your image at the same time.
This section includes tools for processing an image that are part of the Photoshop Standard Suite or the Photoshop Creative Suite.
For more information on the Power Tools, see Chapter 9, “Power Tools for Photographers,” in this book.

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements are two very well-known graphics editing programs. Photoshop Elements is a free alternative to Photoshop. PSD and PSDx are the two file formats used by Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. For all intents and purposes, they are the same and it’s just a matter of personal preference.
What is Photoshop Elements?
According to Wikipedia:
Photoshop Elements is a graphics editing program designed for photographers, graphic designers, web designers, and those who work with images, logos, and icons. It was developed by Adobe Systems and is a freely licensed version of the popular image editing software Photoshop. It contains the same tools and features of Photoshop but with a simplified interface and fewer options.
What is Photoshop used for?
Photoshop was originally used for designing high-quality graphics for printed copies of a magazine or newspaper. It can also be used to create digital graphics for the web, Facebook, etc. For business users, it can be used to create digital marketing material, brochures, logos, business cards, or presentations.
Photoshop Elements is very similar to Photoshop and it has many of the same capabilities. If Photoshop is used for editing photos, Photoshop Elements is the logical choice for editing digital pictures.
Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements can also be used for creating artwork for video games, movie credits, product design, or other creative projects.
What should I know about Photoshop and Photoshop Elements?
That is the first question you should ask yourself. If you are new to Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, read these 10 tips before you start to save time and money by learning how to use Photoshop.
1. Use the Preview to check your work
When you are designing graphics, it is vital to check your work before you save or publish it to the web. With Photoshop Elements, you can view your images in the preview pane before you create them.
2. Use the Select Tools
You can use the brush tools in the standard Photoshop tools palette to add, delete, modify, or modify layers in your designs.
3. Use the Adjustment Tools
Have you ever wanted to achieve a different color temperature in your Photoshop or Photoshop Elements file? Use the adjustment tools to adjust the color of an image and see the results.
4. Use the Eraser Tool
The Photoshop Eraser tool can be used to remove unwanted elements from your design.
5. Use the

Illustrating a new fiber optic connector, Prof. L. Luis Ernesto de la Torre of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering uses a computer mouse to turn on the fiber optic connector. This is an example of a “red-top” optical fiber, which is a special optical fiber that transmits color. These fibers allow light to be sent to different wavelengths of light (colors), creating a rainbow effect.
In an effort to allow students to further explore the National Science Bowl this year, CSUF faculty and staff volunteered to help with the organization of the 2013 Contest. Headed by CSUF Psychology and Physics professors Tara Duerksen and Amy Clevidence, respectively, the faculty have made significant contributions to the content and look and feel of each challenge.
CSUF faculty member Jesus S. Aguilar is co-author of a research paper published in the journal Frontiers of Physiology that outlines a promising new technology for treating “heart failure” in the brain. The research was led by Alberto Mieli, assistant professor of the Department of Cardiology and Neurology at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
In a new research study, lead author Shannon D. Leach, research assistant professor of the Institute for Integrative Genome Biology, details the successful use of the technology of “honeybees,” also called social insects, to amplify an existing human science-fiction concept, “graphene” technology.
The Bistro 1854, an on-campus restaurant at the University of Notre Dame, introduced the country’s first program of research, the Notre Dame Laboratory School. This program, which was started in 1854 and which was brought to CSUF in 2011, combines the teachings of chemistry, biology and physics into a single course.

Canadians have been duped by fake police fliers and bogus job postings in the latest tactics of those trying to lure unsuspecting job seekers to distant countries under false pretenses.
Callers have gotten around filtering programs that block calls from overseas, convincing victims to send their money by wire transfer, then disappearing.
“I think the best way to describe it is a call-center con game. [The caller] comes on as a police officer and he’ll make you believe that they need to get out of Canada for some reason,” said Andrei Kazanski, director of the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, which has seen a spate of such cases lately.
Recent police reports include:
A seven-month-old boy is reunited with his family in B.C. after they sent him to Spain to join his father. The father was working as a tow-truck driver and had taken his son along on a job.
In December, Montreal police arrested a Pakistani national who had been promising people they could get rich in Nigeria.
A similar caller was in Toronto, trying to lure customers to Dubai, Dubai police told CBC News.
Kazanski said people are particularly vulnerable to this kind of fraud if they are desperate for work, feel lonely or isolated and don’t know where to turn.
“The more difficult it is for them to find jobs, the more vulnerable they become to these kinds of fraud,” he said. “There’s really nothing that you can do, other than not to give out your personal information, your email address.”
He cautions Canadians not to send money through Western Union if they’re in a remote place.
“If it’s not an absolute necessity, we would not recommend that people send the money through Western Union,” Kazanski said. “It’s not only money that’s stolen, but the cost of sending a wire transfer, plus the fact that Western Union is very vulnerable to cyber attacks.”
Filtering programs prevent calls from abroad
He said services like Canada411.ca and 411.ca are more effective ways to contact Canadian service providers — at least when customers aren’t wanting jobs.
A legitimate job board would never ask for money, Kazanski said, although it might ask for a reference or a small amount of money to verify a person isn’t selling fake jobs.
CBC News called Western Union for comment, but the company said it was out of the
