**Layer Management**
Each Photoshop file can include multiple layers that can display different effects by using the Layer Controls menu. From the top menu bar, choose Edit > Create a New Layer. A black layer appears and is named Layer 0. (You can make a blank layer when working on the default Layers palettes, but it is much easier to drag a new layer into the current document when creating new layers.) Click on the small down arrow next to the Layer 0 name to open the Layer Options window, as shown in Figure 15-2, where you can set the options.

Every layer has a number assigned to it, starting at zero. Note that the number isn’t related to the size or resolution of the image. You will have as many layers as you need to accomplish the job.
As an example, create a new background layer over the current image and name the layer Cimi. (Color should be set as white and the Fill box checked for ease of matching.) You can use either the Draw or Brush tool to create the Cimi layer. Don’t forget to click on the Save for Web and Devices icon at the bottom to save the layer settings.

Make a folder titled Photoshop Elements, and let’s get started!
1. Create a New Project
Go to File Menu > New > Project.
Go to File Menu > New > Project. You’ll see the dialog box shown in the image below:
In the window, you’ll see your most recently opened documents. Navigate to Photoshop Elements > My Documents > PS Basic > New from folder.

File Menu > Acquire > From File. You’ll be able to select multiple files.
File Menu > > > Acquire > and press Enter.
You’ll see a dialog box open, shown below:
Type the image filenames or path in the Source field and click Open.
3. Set Up Your Workspace
In the workspace, you’ll work with items from the layers list and layer palette. The workspace consists of the layers list, layer palette and a simple image window.
You can add your own toolbars.

Layers—the basic unit of all of your images—are arranged from left to right, top to bottom.
The tools that you can use on layers are limited to the one used to create a layer. You’ll learn about layers in more detail in the next section.
You can rearrange layers by dragging the layer name up or down on the layers list.
2. Layer Palette
The layers list is just a subset of the tools available on the Layer Palette.
The tools on the Layer Palette are:
Layers : The default layer. The layer you create in Photoshop Elements.

Using the Spot Healing Brush Tool
For easy use, it is recommended that the Spot Healing Brush tool be kept in the default set of Photoshop tools. To open the Spot Healing Brush tool, select Window | Brush. The Spot Healing Brush tool does one job well: It will heal brush strokes and scratches from your images. It can be used for both images and selections.
